Moore's investigation into the nature of ethical terms (e.g. good) in his Principia Ethica (1903), which identified the naturalistic fallacy. Prior to Wittgenstein’s work in the 1930s and afterward, many philosophers, especially those influenced by logical atomism, held that, for at least a large class of terms—proper names and noun phrases, for example—the meaning of the term is just the particular entity in the world that it names. Gilbert Ryle, as early as 1931, called philosophy the task of detecting of the sources in linguistic idioms of recurrent misconstructions and absurd theories. {2} His 1949 book The Concept of Mind attacked the Cartesian notion of a disembodied mind in a physical body, the "ghost in the machine".
